Grace wins.
Pre WOD checklist - I had 135 on the bar, the back corner of the room, loud/angry music on my iPod and a bad attitude. I was warmed up and ready to give maximum effort for this short test.
I really thought I could go sub 3:00. And reps 1-15 flew by. Did 10 touch and go, dropped the bar and did another 5. Peeked up and it was just about a minute in. Then, as often happens, the wheels came off.
My final time was 3:45 - which is an amazing 2:04 better than First Friday in June. Or 35…

5 rounds: 275m run, 9 ring dips, 12 pushups & 15 WBs
Time 15:14.
I came in 1st in the 1230 class - Actually 1st of all people not named Chad - which means 3rd. Have I ever beaten anyone named Chad -or Chris for that matter- at CFOT? Not likely.
Nice little workout today. Hurt intensely and then it was over. Am I the only one that questions Jerry's sanity for pairing 5 rounds of WBs and runs on the day after heavy back squats? My pencil legs are revolting and cramping up. I work at a desk…

Top weight 215 x 5.
I never used to squat in the gym by myself. No surprise, my legs look like pencils.
When doing back squats my shoulder/rotator cuff continue to keep me from getting a low bar placement on my back. A high back squat throws everything off and limits how much I can do, but my shoulder pain allows only so much. Felt better today, but still not great.
As for the today, I never failed, but I was close. Saw some stars after reps 3 and 4 of the last set. Chriss said they were all…

Fight gone bad variation
5 rounds, 5 stations, 5 minutes on, 1 minute off
3,2,1 Go!
Had to shuffle my schedule and go to class 0900. I bounce back and forth between that class and 1230 - and I like them both. Sometimes I just can make one and sometimes I can make the other. One of these days, I will go after work again as well. Since I am now 40, I can admit that I am sore and creaky in the am, and sometimes after work, I feel more ready to tackle the WOD. But today had to be 0900 and the tea…

Hit a little boxing with Chad on Sun night. His normal coach / sparring partner was out of town so I was sort of a poor man's fill-in. I was kind of hoping for a rest day since I hit 5 WODs last week, but why not.
2 - alternating 3 minute rounds of hitting focus mits

then 2 altern…

Today is August 1, 2009. I joined Crossfit OldTown Feb 2, 2009.

Here is me, or at least me last fall. 185lbs, which is my PR. Body fat was 22%. Cholesterol was 205 while taking Lipitor as well as Allegra, Advair and Albuterol. Notice the round stomach, love handles and face…

Monday 7/27: Press x 1,1,1, Push Press x 1,1,1 Push Jerk x 1,1,1
Monday morning. I woke up thinking about a rest day. The prior week I had gone 6 days straight, and I was still sore after a Sunday off. But this workout got me up and at ‘em. The last time we had done the same was a month or two ago. At that session, I got a 165 strict press, and just missed 170. I wanted it bad. But not to be on that day.
That same day Melissa noted that I also had an issue with the Jerk, and instead was mostly…

25 power cleans Rx 165 lbs (I did 135)
50 CTB pull ups
75 wall ball
100 ab mats
Note that this was WOD 6 this week for me at Crossfit. Perfect attendance! And perfectly worn down. But the programming was just right, so I survived - barely.
Back to today. I am not sure if 4 exercises makes a chipper, but I just like the visual of a calling string of exercises that you go through once for time being compared to going in one end of a wood chipper and coming out the other.
Jerry led a solid warm-…

I love my Vibram five finger shoes. I love them as much as they stink – and they really stink.
So don’t be fooled. My biggest gains came not from walking into Crossfit, not from the great coaching we get, not from reading the Primal Blueprint; no, it’s the shoes. OK, that is not true at all. But my improvements from Crossfit are slow and steady - get a little better everyday. And although the Primal Blueprint has changed my weight and my view of food, it too is a gradual pound a week kind of th…

Thought I could take my daughter for ice cream without having some. But it was hot, and what the hell - Dairy Godmother is good. It is the first time I think I have had ice cream all summer, which might explain how I have dropped 20 lbs.
Funny thing though. Soon as I ordered, saw a fellow Crossfitter. No names, cause she was equally trying to sneak some.
Jerry has people everywhere.

Just saying "snatch" can make you giggle. Until you see it in a workout, and immediately realize that there is nothing at all funny about it.
I can’t remember the last time we hit the snatch (see the jokes just write themselves!) But today’s WOD was:
Snatch * 12 @ 75lb
Pull ups * 12
Burpees * 12
Nothing funny about it. You could tell me 101 snatch jokes right now, and I would not even smile.
It has been a while since we did this exercise. I think I have done it twice ever. So first thing I d…

Dr in the am. Cholesterol check.
Kids camp pickup at lunch.
90 degrees and humid afternoon.
Rest day it is.
WOD sounded good and I was up for it.
I am going to just kill the Fri WOD - whatever it is.

Right on the heels of the Sat cleans clinic, we had a max weight clean day. And for added fun we did the O/H Jerk too. My max clean to date was 185 and I have never tried a clean & jerk of more than 155 when we did in the two lifts per minute drill a few months ago.
I have a lot to work on form wise. Given all that, I was mildly pleased with 175 and a near miss at 185.
One bright spot. The Jerk. A month ago when we did max weight Jerk presses, I did push presses all the way to 200. Today,…

Hit the 5 pm. It is good to mix it up and see some other folks. The good cheer soon ended through as Chris had us frog-hopping and girl-skipping around.
Then came the WOD. 5 rounds 15 pull ups, 30 push ups and 45 ab mats. Sounded easy enough and in my head I thought that I could average 1 minute per station and come in near 15. First round through I actually was ahead of pace. Then the wheels fell off the truck. Specifically the push ups. I can do some push ups, but they quickly vanished. Leavi…

6 months in and 20 pounds down
Actually, it is not quite 6 months. But the weight is really dropping off me. At first, all I did was start the CrossFit program and I kept eating crap. Since starting CrossFit, I think I have lost 2-3 pounds each month, while at the same time I have definitely packed on some muscle. As pool season has started, I have been getting comments from friends and looks from strangers, and my daughter told me that I have Popeye arms. Being compared to a cartoon icon by a…

Today we had a choice of doing a Dirty 30 reps or a Filthy 50 reps of 10 exercises. By my tally 75% of the almost 70 people who crossed through the door today, chose a Filthy 50 – and I was one of them.
A few (5) months ago when I started, I would have struggled mightily through 30. A few weeks ago, I might have chosen 30 and called it a day. Especially because some of the 10 exercises listed are not my personal favorites. I dislike KB swings, my double-unders are broken and ankle scarring. Wal…

Sometimes working out with someone else can help, and sometimes not so much.
Last week during Dan’s Club, I shared a rack with Chriss S. so that when he was doing strict press, I was on the pull-ups and vice-versa. I am completive and sometimes foolishly so. And I have always been able to strict press – yes I was a college cheerleader. So that day, sharing a bar to me meant that whatever weight he had on the bar, I was going to do it – if not add more. By wound 3, my adrenaline was kicking in a…

Holy hell that hurts. It hurt a little during, and a little more in the last 800m run. But after hanging out for a while and then sitting down for dinner - here comes the pain.
That is one risk of doing CF in another town. The workouts don's always fit together. Such as when my visit to Boca Raton CF with 4 rounds of 100m walking lunges (on pavement no less - ouch!) followed 2 days later by more lunges today at CFOT.
Plus - I have hit 5 days in a row this week - which is a first and likely not…

A quick business trip is no reason to for me quit CrossFitting. There are affiliates all over – including a good one in Boca Raton.
CrossFit Hardcore is the home of Omar “Bionic” Torres and his 2 minute Fran and 1:32 500m row that I saw on You Tube. They are located in a business park and unless you were looking for it, you would not know it was there. They have a 2-garage door warehouse type gym that hosts both CrossFit and regular gym equipment. Met a powerlifter there who was 6’3” and built…
